Youth notes

The following are items of interest about Jefferson City area young people.

Blair Oaks Junior High will hold a back to school dance from 7:30-10:30 p.m., Aug. 27, in Blair Oaks Middle/High School cafeteria.

Admission for the dance, sponsored by BHS National Honor Society, is $5, and parochial students are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.




ANDREW PROPST, son of Jerry and Marsha Propst, Russellville, was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students for 2003-04.

He is on the honor roll, a member of the art club, FBLA, and yearbook staff. He has a black belt in karate. Only five percent of students in high school are named to Who's Who each year.





CAROLYN HUG and DAMON MORRIS, were named Council for Drug Free Youth students of the month.

Hug, daughter of Dr. Ned Hug and Cabielle Malfalti-Rachell, is a student at Helias High School where she is in Young Life, Future Leaders and is a Team Spirit member.

Morris, son of Dr. Dean and Mitzie Morris, is a student at Jefferson City High School, where he is a track and cross country member and on the National Honor Society. Each student received $25.




ELIZABETH PICKENS, daughter of Marcell and Casandra Pickens, Jefferson City, was selected as a state finalist in the National American Miss pageant, Aug. 15-16, in St. Louis.




BRITTANY HUHMANN, daughter of Bruce and Mary Huhmann, attended the 8th Annual Mathematics Camp for high school girls at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The camp is designed to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for girls to develop their mathematical abilities and interests. Participants took a week-long course on the mathematics of codes and minicourses on bioinformatics, aerodynamics and knots.

Huhmann is a student at Helias High School.




BRIAN TAYLOR, ANTHONY JOHNSON, ALEX PRENGER, JOHN VIGNOLA, KURT KRAUTMANN, SLAVA PUYAT, BRENT VOGEL, LOGAN STOCKMAN and MIKE SCHWARZER, members of Boy Scout Troop 104, St. Joseph Cathedral, returned from the Canadian Border Outfitters High Adventure in Ely, Minn.

The scouts, along with their leaders, traveled 60 miles on land and water, backpacking, portaging, canoeing, hiking, cooking and camping for seven days.
