Our Opinion
Re-elect Circuit Judge Tom Brown

Not only do the courts deal with the same kinds of cases filed elsewhere, the circuit also receives cases from Cole County's prison facilities and from state government. Some of those government cases must be decided not only fairly, but quickly, because often they deal with election issues. Even though they did not all reach the final ballot, this election season produced cases on a voter ID law and constitutional amendments dealing with eminent domain, a state spending lid and a tobacco tax.
Overseeing these activities is Presiding Circuit Judge Tom Brown. Based on his background and experience, Brown, a Democrat, deserves re-election on Tuesday.
His opponent, Republican Jon Beetem, is an articulate lawyer who would bring a private practice perspective to the bench. But Brown's service to the judiciary and the community is extensive.
As examples:
* Brown has served as a circuit judge since 1994.
* The circuit, under his purview, recently earned a perfect score and was one of only two circuits in the state honored for its case management by the Missouri Supreme Court.
* Brown served as an associate circuit judge from 1987-97.
* He was the county prosecuting attorney from 1978-86 and, prior to that, an assistant prosecutor.
* He led the effort to rebuild the Michael W. Prenger Family Center after it was destroyed by a fire.
* He was a co-founder of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS) and the Capital Area Community Service Agency (CACSA).
Tom Brown has devoted his entire career to improving public safety and enforcing the law fairly in Cole County. He has earned re-election on Tuesday.
