With schools across the nation, students broke the record for the most people reading aloud simultaneously with a passage from the children's book “Charlotte's Web,” by E.B. White.
Blair Oaks Elementary School began the passage at 11 a.m. along with more than 400,000 other students. Together they called out the first word, “Salutations!”
The selected dialogue from chapter five of “Charlotte's Web,” detailed Wilbur the pig's introduction to Charlotte the spider. By the time the 382 students repeated Wilbur saying, “I think you're beautiful,” the elementary school had set their page in history.
Second-grade student Brent Prenger said the passage was a little difficult, but he looked forward to telling his parents about the project when he went home.
“I'm going to tell them we were reading with people across the United States to break the world record,” he said.
Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records weren't on hand to oversee the event. Instead, they demand each participating school have at least two people not connected to the school verify what happened.
Winslow heard of the event through an e-mail sent by a former teacher and signed up her school over the Internet.
“The kids are really excited about the new movie coming out and this is a way to encourage their interest,” Winslow said. “Some might be inspired to read more of the book.”
