Your Opinion: County commission faulted for approach, tone

Dear Editor:

As the chairman of Jefferson City's Historic Preservation Commission, it goes without saying that I am more than disappointed in the Cole County Commission's decision to tear down the old county sheriff's residence and jail. However, I am more concerned with both the approach and tone the commission used to justify its actions.

We are talking about public buildings built with public monies. Why did the commission have only two public meetings starting at 9 a.m.? Apparently, they were not really seeking public input. Why is it that the commission, according to Mr. Hoelscher, could work on the project for five years, but refuses to grant another few weeks for public input? I also do not appreciate his condescending and dismissive comment that "people are mad." We are not mad sir, we care about this city, both culturally and economically.

Don't we owe our children and grandchildren an opportunity to learn about the city in which they are growing up? Mr. Ellinger and Mr.

Scheperle, not everything is or should be about money. I suggest that the commission take a time out to reconsider its decision. Nothing has been done that cannot be undone. Schedule public meetings in the evening when the public is actually able to attend. Bring documentation that your plan to spend millions will save the taxpayers money. Listen to your constituents.

And yes, I know this letter is in vain. These guys, especially Ellinger, want to move as quickly as possible so they can get their names inscribed on the plaque inside the new building. It's every politician's greatest dream!
