Jefferson City Council sets property tax rate

The Jefferson City Council set the property tax rate for the next year, leaving it unchanged.

At the council meeting Monday, members unanimously approved the unchanged rate after no one spoke at a public hearing on the issue. The city's current property tax rate is set at .5561 cents, though .46 cents is for the general fund while the rest is allocated to the Fireman's Pension Fund.

The city was allowed to raise the property tax rate this year up to .4709 cents for the general fund, which would raise about $93,000 in additional general revenue funds. The city only is allowed to raise the property tax rate in non-assessment years, which is every two years. Interim Finance Director Bill Betts noted there is a chance the rate ceiling could drop before 2016, which is the next opportunity the city has to potentially raise the rate.

In other business, Planning and Protective Services Director Janice McMillan announced two open house dates seeking public comment on the city's trash service.

The city will open a new bidding process next year on solid waste services, currently provided by Allied Waste.

The council is not anticipated to make a selection until September 2015, but the open houses will provide an opportunity for public comment on developing the scope of services.

Open houses will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 and Sept. 16 in the large conference room in City Hall.
