Your Opinion: Close the health care gap

Dear Editor:

The Missouri Chapter of the National Organization for Women calls upon the state Legislature to make health insurance available to all Missouri citizens.

While very low income citizens can get insurance coverage through Medicaid, and middle-income individuals and families can get coverage through the Affordable Care Act, 300,000 hard-working Missouri citizens fall into a gap where they cannot get affordable coverage.

If our federal tax dollars were to be retained for use here in Missouri instead of going to other states, those in the gap could be covered so that they could access preventive medical care rather than having to resort to going to emergency rooms in crisis.

Crises are harder and more expensive to reverse than to prevent. The entire bill for this extended coverage would be borne by the federal government through 2016, and thereafter the state of Missouri would pay only 10 percent of the cost of such coverage, with the federal government paying 90 percent. We call that a bargain!

Retaining health care jobs within the state will boost the economy as well.
