Your Opinion: Respect and enjoy Missouri wildlife

Dear Editor:

What a delightful article with the charming pictures that appeared in the July 1 edition of the baby deer rescued by the April Dyer family. This story brings to mind the numerous deer that just happen to take up residence on my property.

My large property is a regular haven for forms of wildlife unbelievable. This little tidbit is being written to interest citizens to observe and enjoy them before mankind (hunters) destroy God's creatures. It is truly amazing how they act and behave when they are well aware of our seeing them but somehow knowing we aren't going to hurt them, most of us anyway.

Just recently while sitting in a living room chair that faces the open front door looking at the paper, I felt that something was watching me. Looking up, a large doe stood there quite still just looking at me. Upon noticing that she had been seen she immediately but ever so easily strolled leisurely down the slope under the front bedroom windows.

Still another time before this, however, something else took place which was most unusual and delightful to me. Driving up my driveway and turning toward the door of the garage, I stopped quite suddenly. I beheld two large does so I turned off the motor and just watched them. There was plenty of vast space for them between the quite large oak tree that spread its limbs over the fenced dogpen shielding the area from the blazing sun and the trees close to the top of the driveway and the wooded area.

These animals laid down almost side by side on the grassy area to relax. And they knew I was there. After a long rest for them took place with one deer concentrating on the highway and the other with its head focusing toward Country Club Drive. Their behavior really fascinated me as they seemed to be so contented enjoying their afternoon resting periods just like working humans who take their morning and afternoon coffee breaks.

After awhile the animal's resting period was interrupted by a car backfiring on the highway and off they ran into the wooded area existing on the upper half of my property.
