Your Opinion: Costs of "green energy' not publicized

Dear Editor:

It is interesting that actual costs were omitted from a press release about a Greene County solar facility. The local utility plans to ask customers how much of the higher priced solar energy they might be willing to purchase, but apparently, even though the utility has agreed to buy the electricity, they don't know the cost.

The bottom line is that customers will pay for all of the much-higher-priced power, whether they want it or not, since the utility has agreed to buy all of the electricity produced by the facility.

According to the EIA (Energy Information Administration) the average cost of electricity produced by a new natural gas generating facility is about 6.6 cents/kwh, while it is 13 cents/kwh for electricity produced by a new PV solar facility. The same EIA report says that the cost of electricity generated by wind averages 8 cents/kwh.

If you think your current electricity bill is high just wait until you start paying the non-subsidized cost of "green" energy. I find it disgusting that the government/media/utilities seemingly refuse to provide actual cost data when touting the wonderful world of green. I guess I should expect it, after all it is the same government who ignores the 4th Amendment while spying on us (with the approval of secret judges), and the same one that harasses those who think the federal government is to big (IRS scandal).
