Your Opinion: Drivers should pay transportation tax

Dear Editor:

I do not believe Sen. Kehoe is acting in the best interest of Missourians when he advocates increasing the sales tax to support the needs of transportation in Missouri.

It would appear to me that the best way to fund transportation would be to increase the Missouri state gasoline tax by one penny. Missouri has not increased the tax on gasoline for over 20 years. A one cent tax would support the needs of transportation now and in the future.

More than a third of the vehicles on Missouri roads are big, heavy, gas guzzlers such as vans, SUVs, big pickup trucks, to say nothing of the big transport trucks. A usage tax to support transportation would seem fair. Those who drive the big, heavy, gas guzzlers put more wear and tear on the bridges and roads and those who drive will each pay their fair share to support the needs of transportation.

Sen. Kehoe drives a big, heavy, gas guzzler and he and every other Missourian have a right to drive what they can afford. Sen. Kehoe and the other Republicans passed all kinds of tax breaks for the rich in Missouri, but I think it is time for those who use our Missouri roads and bridges to pay for their upkeep with a small one cent increase in the Missouri gasoline tax.

This is what this tax was designed for in the first place. Why should those Missourians who are retired and live on a fixed income and many who do not even own an automobile pay for the repairs to our roads and bridges? Those who drive the most should pay the most.
