Committee approves funds for police training

The Public Safety Committee has approved a request for additional training funds for Jefferson City police officers.

At the committee meeting Tuesday, Police Chief Roger Schroeder presented a request for a $17,000 supplemental appropriation for training sessions through the end of the fiscal year. The money would come from the police training fund, not general revenue, which is funded through surcharges on criminal cases in the municipal court.

"This is the only source of training money that we have right now," Schroeder said.

The training sessions, which Schroeder said were identified as being important for officers, would include certification renewals, organizational memberships, system information updates and contemporary police topics, such as mental health and mobile device investigations.

"We want to stay on top of those types of things," Schroeder said.

The committee unanimously approved the request, which will go to the full City Council for review.

In other business, Lt. Eric Wilde said an outdoor emergency warning siren at Lewis and Clark Middle School is back in service after being damaged by woodpeckers. Wilde said the city has yet to receive the invoice for the work performed, but it is expected to cost more than $5,000.
