Your Opinion: All candidates urged to participate in forum

Dear Editor:

I have been an educator and administrator for a significant portion of my career. As an administrator, I often made decisions on who to hire. This was always a difficult process that required me to review applications, résumés and, ultimately, interview candidates.

The process is similar (if not exactly the same) as choosing between candidates for office. We as voters go through the process of reviewing candidates for the job for which they are running. Obviously each candidate cannot independently meet with each voter for an "interview' thus we must rely on the newspaper, radio and various forms of communication to provide us this opportunity. Another important aspect of this process is public forums.

As an administrator, I would never hire an individual for a job without a face-to-face interview. Why would we, as voters, be denied the same opportunity to interview the candidates for an elected position? We are hiring an individual to perform a job. Shouldn't we be able to ask the candidates questions?

It is greatly disturbing to me that we have not had more public forums and the forums that have been held, the opposing candidate, Brian Stumpe, has not participated in. There is to be another public forum for all of our local candidates on Thursday, hosted by Lincoln University. I hope that all of the candidates are in attendance so we, the voters, can meet the candidates and ask them questions or "interview' them.
