Your Opinion: Counter-protesters provide service to the community

Dear Editor:

Like everyone I was not pleased to learn that the members of the Westboro Baptist Church, taking unfair advantage of the riots in Ferguson, were spreading their message of hate in our town.

But I was very pleased to hear that 50 of my fellow citizens were also present protesting against the half dozen who came up from Kansas. I think by doing so with their own signs and peaceful assembly and not giving these unwelcome intruders more publicity than they already had, they did a greater service to their community and to the country as a whole than all the fire bombs and hate mongering of recent days has done. Showing clearly that the Westboro Church is a complete failure. "It lives, it does not grow."

No words of mine or any single action will change the minds of those deluded people from Kansas, but let us take comfort from the words of Psalm 63, "the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped."
