Your Opinion: Non-discrimination favored

Dear Editor:

Thursday's article, "LGBT Protections Divide Business Interests in Missouri," outlined the support and opposition by various business leaders in the state for a proposed workplace non-discrimination law.

But what do small business owners think about this issue? Small employers in Missouri overwhelmingly believe we're overdue for a state policy protecting all workers from discrimination. During my meetings with small business owners around Missouri, I consistently hear that they believe in evaluating employees on their skills and work ethic - not their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Additionally, Small Business Majority's scientific opinion polling found a sweeping 71 percent of Missouri entrepreneurs believe the state should have a law prohibiting employment discrimination against gay and transgender people.

Small business owners believe a workplace non-discrimination policy is good for business, helps companies attract and retain talent, and it's the right thing to do.

It's time for the state Legislature to take note of small business support for this issue and send a bill to the governor's desk now.
