JC man gets probation for Taos park damage

A Jefferson City man has been placed on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to charges in connection with vandalism at Countryside Park in Taos last June.

William Fowler, 38, pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and second-degree property damage.

A charge of stealing was dismissed.

According to a Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement, the park manager reported copper and power cords had been cut from an air-conditioning unit in the park building.

The lock on the shed attached to the park building had been cut, and two gas cans were taken. The door to the concession stand had also been damaged.

A few days after the initial report, another report was made of damage to a ball field at the park. Power cables and coaxial cables had been cut from the scoreboard.

Authorities said Fowler went to the park and committed the vandalism, went back to his home, and stripped and burned the wires so he could obtain the copper from inside them.

The items were to be scrapped for money.
