Man hospitalized after cow trampling

A Cole County man was flown to University Hospital in Columbia after being trampled by a cow Wednesday morning north of Centertown.

According to Sheriff's Department officials, the call came in around 11 a.m to go to the 10000 block of Mud Creek Road.

The victim was the owner of the cow, which stomped once on the man's chest.

"Anytime you have a situation involving a chest wound it's serious, so that's why the helicopter was brought in," said Chief Deputy Capt. John Wheeler.

As of Wednesday evening, there was no report on his condition.

Wheeler noted there was great cooperation between the sheriff's department, Regional West Fire Protection District, Cole County EMS and the 911 Dispatch Center to get the victim assisted as fast as possible. He was loaded onto the helicopter approximately 30-40 minutes after the initial call for help came in.

"If you know where Mud Creek Road is at, it is quite a distance to get to, but for emergency crews to get out there and assess the situation as quickly as they did I think is impressive," Wheeler said.
