Suspect in infant abuse case pleads

The girlfriend of a Jefferson City man charged with abusing his infant child last November has pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree endangering the welfare of child in connection with the case.

Kacie Reed, 26, of 1014 Elizabeth St., was placed on five years supervised probation, part of which includes a 60-day shock detention sentence in the Cole County Jail.

Derick Welsch, 29, of 708 E. High St., was earlier charged with abuse of a child. He is scheduled to be in court again on this case at the end of September.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows the 12-week-old victim suffered a broken left clavicle while staying at Reed's residence.

Welsch told investigators the injury occurred when another child had fallen on top of the victim.

Medical staff at Capital Region Medical Center said with the type of break the victim suffered, it was unlikely Welsch's story was true.

Reed had initially backed up Welsch's story, but later recanted, saying she and Welsch orchestrated the story to prevent the Missouri Division of Family Services from investigating them.

Reed later said she saw Welsch punch the child in the left arm, and the victim lost the use of his arm for a short period of time.

Reed also said the victim had a serious medical condition called Tetralogy of the Fallot, which he received open heart surgery for in January.
