Your Opinion: Obligated to speak to protect the unborn

Dear Editor:

In response to Sue Gibson's letter in support of abortion I want to protect those who have no way to protect themselves.

A woman in this country has much say over her body, particularly her "choice" to have consensual sex which is the overwhelming leading cause of pregnancy. Even when babies are conceived under unfortunate conditions, there is still an innocent life to protect and a multitude of parents who would gladly adopt and love that child.

Those who oppose abortion don't wish harm to women during pregnancy, but even during times of risk, there is still an unborn life to be considered and protected. The lives of thousands of babies should not be lost for the protection of one. That same woman was once a baby that you would argue was at one time without a heartbeat or REM. You were fortunate enough to be given life, and today exercise your freedom to speak against the protection of babies.

Your argument contradicts your own existence. Demonstrating at a church makes sense to you, but don't equate it to demonstrating where abortions take place. Protesting at a church is unlikely to change the mindset of the Christians in attendance there. Therefore, it seems the only purpose for being there would be to antagonize. Demonstrators go to a clinic in hopes of changing the mind of a woman who is ambiguous about her decision and potentially saving a life.

Opinions should be expressed in a loving way. I don't agree with speaking in hatred, whichever way it's being slung. I understand there was a man who followed the student pro-life procession from St. Peter to St. Joseph last week yelling profanities and calling at them like sheep. Crude, ineffective, ignorant and antagonistic.

Wherever you choose to speak your mind, expect that you will be met with resistance from those whose opinions differ and who have the same right to free speech as you. As a woman, I am not interested in your sort of "protection" where more lives are lost than are saved and females are protected if they were lucky enough to make it past the first few months of existence. Babies, who grow into men and women, are God's gift and are not disposable.

As a Christian, it is my obligation to take recognize and speak out against things in our society that are working against God's will.
