Disturbances result in numerous arrests, threats against officers in JC

Jefferson City police were called to a number of disturbances during the early morning hours of Sunday, following Fourth of July festivities.

A total of nine arrests were made, three of which were after bar closings in the downtown area for fighting in public.

The remaining six arrests were attributed to a large party at Capitol Avenue and Cherry Street, which required additional assistance from the Cole County Sheriff's Department, Missouri Capitol Police, and the Lincoln University Police Department.

According to reports, a large party and disturbance began in the street at approximately 3 a.m. at that location. When officers arrived and attempted to break up the disturbance, the crowd turned on the officers as they made one arrest. James Duhart, 23, was arrested for peace disturbance, drinking in public, and failure to obey a law enforcement officer. Duhart also resisted arrest and spit on officers at the scene and in the jail.

At 4:30 a.m., calls of shots fired were received from the same area and five shell casings were located. The disturbance then moved to the convenience stores at 800 Stadium. Reports of an assault surfaced and along with a fight related to that assault, and as officers stopped various persons related to the incident, the officers again were confronted by other persons who threatened and attempted to intimidate officers from taking action. A total of five more arrests were made, to include charges for assault, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer.

Although threatened numerous times, no officers were injured during the incidents.
