Your Opinion: Democratic leader's remarks called "disingenuous'

Dear Editor:

I found the letter in your June 24 issue by Susan Cook, president of the Jefferson Democratic Club of Cole County, to be disingenuous.

In her letter Cook claims that Cole County Democrats believe that "when all of us join hands and work together, we can make a difference not only in Cole County but everywhere our voices can be heard."

I agree with her general point but injecting partisanship into the much-needed and long overdue national debate over racism smacks of opportunistic politics.

The pressing issues we face in addressing racism and restoring public confidence in the justice system are neither Democrat nor Republican matters. Rather they are matters that all Americans, from all walks of life and all faiths and political labels, must aggressively address if we are to move forward as a nation.

Thinly-veiled attempts to seize the political high ground do nothing to expedite that process and in fact encourage the very divisiveness the writer says she abhors.
