News Tribune staff garners 11 APME awards

The Jefferson City News Tribune earned 11 awards from the Associated Press Managing Editors 2014 News Contest announced recently.

Opinion Editor Richard McGonegal took first and third in the Opinion Writing category for "Count channel tax dollars to charities" and "Separate public discussion from classroom discussion."

First-place awards also went to designer Anne Kettenbrink in Headline Writing for "Pee, flush, repeat" and to Michelle Brooks in Feature Writing for "Local couple selling all they own for mission."

Reporter Landon Reeves earned two second-place honors in Spot Sports for "340 miles in 88 hours" and in Sports Feature Writing for "Pedals to the pavement."

Sports writer Tony Hawley brought back two third-place awards in Sports Feature Writing for "More to life" and in Spots Sports for "State champs."

Design Editor Doug Waggoner won second place in Headline Writing for "Fowl noise not afoul of the law."

And reporter Madeleine Leroux and webmaster Kurt Becker received second place for Best Website.

In the Public Interest/Investigative or In-Depth Reporting category, reporters Jeff Haldiman and Brooks with McGonegal took third place for "Historic vs. Merely Old?"
