Your Opinion: Stop partisan posturing; create jobs program

Dear Editor:

The Jefferson City News Tribune May 6 edition headlined "Lawmakers override veto to enact welfare limits" was not surprising. I recently made a few visits to both the Missouri Senate and House of Representatives to watch our tax dollars at work.

My impression was disappointment because of Republican disrespect given to Democrats with rational legislative concerns. The display by the Missouri legislature's majority was unbelieving. It is apparent that the majority is given license to disregard, in a pompous parliamentarian spectacle, the occasional Democrat conveying sound logic. Republican philosophy and self-importance undeniably supersedes genuine state concerns related to harmonious prosperity for Missouri's citizens.

Forsaking better angels, the party of Lincoln and Eisenhower is displaying an overtly prejudicial demeanor. This behavior does not reflect the finer character traits I have come to feel from Missouri people I have grown to know in my 20 years residence in this state.

Missourians have built a de facto single-party state. Shuttering-out Democrats has caused an unwise situation that runs counter to state unity. The result being the damage of an affordable health care start for hundreds of thousands of citizens and the accompanying health care created jobs.

Republican legislators overriding Gov. Nixon's veto allows Missouri to cut several thousand families from unemployment benefits, according to the News Tribune. The employer-funded unemployment benefits are instead cheekily called welfare by Republicans. In addition, Christian values citizens take heed that The News Tribune also reports new laws that will reduce Temporary Assistance to Needy Families.

Republicans also pushed to disallow cities in Missouri to impose local minimum wages; as if each city does not possess better wisdom to know its own needs for financial growth. If you do not think this is Republican middle-class growth obstruction ... think again. Heaven forbid that state employees in that locality might require a small rise in pay, distressing Republican state lawmakers.

The answer is a simple one. Develop a tangible job program. Looking beyond special interests, Republicans along with the Democrats could both gleefully take credit for reducing unemployment in an honorable fashion. However, firstly stop ruining the jobless and poor since a viable job program has not concerned this legislature.

Build job programs instead of shattering under-advantaged Missourians. Do something positive for the Missouri economy while not destroying families. Plus the ACA along with Medicaid approval will do both. What a concept!
