Your Opinion: Elect supporters of environment

Dear Editor:

I read Mr. Johnson's recent letter and sympathize with his argument that the scientific method should drive our response to climate change, but from a different viewpoint.

I am a scientist with college degrees and work experience to justify that statement. In a research position I once held, I received orders from the office of the governor to change the data supporting my findings in a serious matter concerning public health. I would not, resulting in a career change which landed me in Missouri.

Few scientists are willing to let politicians or even their own political views direct their work. But there are a few, which may explain why about 3 percent still deny that climate is changing and methane and carbon dioxide are the leading culprits.

I continue to read the journal research papers and agree with the 97 percent of scientists who say we need to quickly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The reason are beyond the scope of this venue.

I have lived on the face of this Earth for nearly four score years. I have seen farmers put their draft horses permanently out to pasture in favor of "them new-fangled tractor contraptions."

Very few have stables or carriage buildings anymore. Time moves on and society slowly changes with new knowledge and technology.

It is now time to embrace clean energy that will improve future lives and grow new economies.

As much as Mr. Johnson and I detest present political philosophies, we must seek and elect officials capable of enabling necessary changes.
