A group of talented local kids will again fill the shoes of big-name magicians at this year's eighth annual Moments of Magic on Feb. 19.

Last year's format change drew mostly positive comments, so the fundraiser will again feature about 10 area kids putting on a short "variety show with a hint of magic," said Debbie Hamler, director of the Special Learning Center in Jefferson City.

The event benefits the SLC Foundation, and has netted more than $250,000 over the seven years it has been held.

Directing the "Hopes & Dreams"-themed production will be Shae Marie Eickhoff, a longtime performer/director in the local theater scene, and Ginger Luetkemeyer, a teacher at Calvary Lutheran High School.

It will again feature local youths including Evan Backes, a budding actor/magician, and brothers Sam and Silas Luetkemeyer, who perform in the band Low Rent District.

The 7 p.m. performance follows a 5:30 p.m. reception that includes food and drink.

The price of admission includes beer from N.H. Scheppers Distributing and Fechtel Beverage as well as wine from St. James Winery. Last year's fare included a good variety of hot hors d'oeurves, fruit and cheese platters, barbecued brisket sandwiches and dessert platters.

The event typically draws about 300 people.

"The reception is very elegant. It's just a good time networking with community people, talking to the staff and board members of Special Learning Center to find out what they do," Hamler said.

The event also will feature a short trivia contest, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Tickets are still available and can be bought at the Special Learning Center at 1115 Fairgrounds Road.
