BizBeat: Five Below to open Friday

National chain Five Below is set to open its Jefferson City store Friday.

Five Below - which, as its name suggests, sells only items priced at $5 or less - is based in Philadelphia and operates 450 stores in 27 states. The Jefferson City store, located in Stoneridge Village next to PetSmart and Dicks Sporting Goods, is one of about 85 new Five Below stores opening in 2016, said marketing spokeswoman Jennifer Hagan.

The closest Five Below previously was in Washington, Missouri.

"When you walk into our store, its kind of like a treasure hunt - you never know what you're going to find," Hagan said. "We really cater to the teen and pre-teen customer."

Five Below products are grouped into eight in-store worlds: Style, Room, Sports, Tech, Crafts, Party, Candy and Now. A trip through the store could find a range of items including cellphone cases and chargers, licensed collectibles, yoga pants and running clothes, nail polish, sports equipment, candy and various seasonal items.

"We're getting into the summer season, so soon well have everything that the customer needs to go to the beach or to the pool," Hagan said.

Five Below stores also carry brand names including Disney, Marvel, Pez, Lego and Crayola.

The Jefferson City Five Below will hold a grand opening celebration starting at 10 a.m. Friday, featuring prize giveaways and Five Below's signature 5-cent hot dogs on Friday and Saturday.

"Once we open our doors, we like to throw a huge party," Hagan said.

The store at 735 Stoneridge Parkway will be open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.
