The Links, Inc., launches new chapter

Central Missouri now has its own chapter of The Links, Incorporated — one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer-service organizations, created primarily to serve the African-American community.

A luncheon and induction ceremony was held Saturday at the Country Club of Missouri, in Columbia. Thirty-seven Mid-Missouri women were welcomed into the organization.

Links, Inc. was founded in 1946 to involve what a news release described as “extraordinary women committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the economic survival of its local communities.”

After 70 years, the organization now has approximately 14,000 members in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

An existing group, the “Central Missouri Women’s Connection” became the 283rd chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

The CMWC long has focused on promoting, and engaging in, educational, civic and intercultural activities to enrich the lives of its members and the communities they live in. CMWC also works to ensure the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and people of African ancestry.

Glenda Newell-Harris, M.D., the organization’s 16th national president, was joined by other national and area officers in conducting the closed Chartering Ceremony before the luncheon.
