Local elderly folks kicked up their heels to live jazz music Saturday night during the 10th Annual Senior Citizen prom hosted by the Jefferson City High School Student Council.
The prom was designed to look and feel like any other high school prom, with colorful decorations to match the “Desert Nights†theme, and a prom king and queen were crowned at the end of the night.
“My favorite part is probably getting to meet and talk to a lot of senior citizens who have really great stories, and a lot of them will wear their prom dresses from high school,†said Student Council President Haley Watson.
Kapital Kicks Orchestra kept the music lively with swing dance tunes, while Student Council members taught attendees some of their dance moves — and vice-versa.
This is the third year Watson has been involved with the prom, and she said it’s always a fun event. Some Student Council members invite their grandparents and get to enjoy a prom with them.
“It’s one of our best community service projects because it’s a good opportunity to get the older generation that we may not interact with otherwise, and they get to have a fun night that they wouldn’t get otherwise,†Watson said.
“We think it’s important to serve our community, including the elderly.â€
