Summer trends mirror Hollywood music festivals

Although it’s unlikely most Mid-Missourians will end up in the desert dancing alongside Hollywood stars at next year’s Coachella music festival, current spring trends suggest we aren’t as far removed as one might initially think.

Last year’s clothing trends really paid tribute to the 1990s. 2016, however, looks back even further toward the 1970s, with wide-leg pants, wide and off-the-shoulder sleeves, bold patterns, fringe, embroidered cut-outs and lace.

Saffees owner Judy Howard said a lot of this year’s fashion choices are new for Jefferson City. Instead of customers seeking out specific fashions, “we’re educating them when they want something new,” she said.

The overall trend — “very Coachella, very festival,” Howard explained.

Cut-outs and patterns pay homage to the ’70s, but the prints are more intense and placed on better fabrics than were previously capable.

“The influence is of the ’70s, but it has the style and making of today’s technology,” Howard said. “There is a tremendous amount of lace; it’s everywhere. And there is color, but the trend is very neutral.”

Trends point toward bohemian and border on hippie. From crop tops and sheer to long tunics and dusters, lace detailing, Aztec and floral patterns — there really is something for everyone this year, most of which transcends generations.

Just across High Street from Saffees, Fine Mess Boutique is also carrying tops and dresses with cut-out detailing, tassels and fringe. The summer romper has made a comeback among younger fashionistas, and there are plenty of fitted and flowy dresses to go around.

Although temperatures will go up, layering is still a trend for now. Crop tops and tanks are being layered with a longer sheer overlay or paired with a duster or the classic button-down plaid.

Those looking to go a little more casual can count on plenty of graphic T’s or tanks with short sayings and simple designs. Distressed jean shorts and capris continue to be a local staple. Many jean shorts are being adorned with lace detailing or have the cut-off effect.

Accessories continue to make or break an outfit. Necklaces are being layered three or four at a time. The choker has even made an appearance. Natural stones are being used in bracelets, statement necklaces and earrings.

When it comes to shoes, chunky heels, lace-up ankles, cage sandal booties, suede material and tassels are gaining popularity.

Whether you were around for the first round of many of these trends or are embracing them for the first time, summer should give everyone something to love.
