The Show-Me Music Up Close bluegrass concert series will celebrate its one-year anniversary this Friday, as it hosts its last concert of the spring series with Special Consensus' debut at Avenue HQ.

"This show is going to be special," said local bluegrass musician Janice Martin, who coordinates the series. "We're celebrating a year of going after our dreams."

Last spring Martin put on her first show of the Show-Me Music Up Close series with the same band, just in a different location.

At that time, Martin said, she had no road map, but now she is more confident with the connections she has made in the community, while increasing outreach efforts to gain more interest in bluegrass and acoustic music.

The Midwest-based Special Consensus is a four-person acoustic bluegrass band that has shared music with audiences for more than 40 years. They were nominated in 2014 for the Best Bluegrass Album Grammy award for their recording of "Scratch Gravel Road." Later that year, the band recorded a "Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver."

"They're not just musicians, they're good people," Martin said. "You're not going to be disappointed with their entertainment and overall skills in keeping the audience engaged."

Martin said the audience can expect an intimate setting that allows people to have a great seat while enjoying the show with the additional perk of meeting the band members if they choose to.

"I want people to know about the music and enjoy an up-close and personal atmosphere while they do. That's what this series is all about," Martin said.

Although this is the last concert of the spring series, Martin said to stay tuned for upcoming shows in the fall.

Tickets for Friday's show cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. They can be purchased online at avenueHQ.space until two hours prior to the show.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Friday. Gumbo Bottoms will provide beverages.
