On Display: Adding joy to life through art

For Faye Zumwalt, being an artist is about being able to really see a thing in all its beauty and complexity, and trying to capture a visual representation of that thing with paint or pastels or pencil.

Since childhood, Zumwalt has been inspired to preserve those images to appreciate over again and to share her emotional response to the colors of her world with other people. At the same time, being an artist is also about creating something that didn't previously exist - on paper or canvas or silk or glass. Using line and color and texture, she loves to make silk scarves, greeting cards or even flower beds.

She loves seeing and studying other artists' creations. Zumwalt loves watching her local artist friends go through their processes to create art, and finds pleasure in visiting galleries or viewing art online and realizing how many different perspectives and methods are used by the artists. She loves taking art classes to explore new ways to use art media and supplies. When examining creations in a museum, Zumwalt is sometimes awed and then tries to understand the ways an artist found to express visual ideas.

There just aren't very many aspects of art that don't add joy to her life. Over the years, Zumwalt has "played with" clay, stained glass, jewelry making, paper mache, paper making and many other forms of media. Currently, she enjoys painting and dying silk scarves, and loves trying new methods to change the white surfaces into sheer, but brilliantly colored, wearable art.

Paper crafting is another current love. With paper and embellishments, she makes beautiful cards for all occasions and creates scrapbooks for her most cherished photographs.

Oil painting has long been a favorite, and she continues trying to improve and expand those skills. She also enjoys pastels and watercolor, and dabbles in acrylics. She has won awards in several media in area competitions. Her favorite subject matter includes portraits, figures, flowers and fruits, and landscapes.

Zumwalt's work can be seen at the Capital Arts Gallery and on her Faye Zumwalt Art Facebook page.
