Blair Oaks approves final 2015-16 budget

The Blair Oaks School Board approved the final budget on Thursday for the 2015-16 school year and made amendments to transfer funds for future campus improvements.

The district ended the year with $10.5 million in operating revenue and $10.23 million in operating expenses, Superintendent Jim Jones said. The board moved to transfer $229,253 of excess revenue to its reserve fund.

All school districts have a reserve fund, also known as a fund balance, to pay for operating expenses from June through December and for emergency situations. With the added funds, the district's fund balance is about $1.8 million, or around 18 percent of its operating expenses.

Jones would like to build the district's fund balance up to around 20 percent so the district has a little more cushion for unexpected expenses, he said.

The board also approved $140,000 to be transferred from the district's operating fund to its capital improvement fund, which pays for building improvements.

The funds will eventually be used to help replace the athletic turf at the Falcon Athletic Complex, repair school building roofs and for construction of an ADA ramp at the high school.

Even though some of the projects won't be completed right away, the board transferred the funds to plan for future projects they know need to be done, Jones said.
