Lawmen raising staffing levels over holiday

This Fourth of July holiday, the Jefferson City Police Department will significantly increase staffing levels throughout the community and in the areas that center around Independence Day festivities.

In particular, additional officers will patrol downtown and in the North Jefferson City area to assist with ensuring a safe event for all those who attend.

JCPD asks people going to Salute to America activities to exercise patience and courtesy, and comply with all traffic direction and parking rules during the events. Area residents are also reminded discharging fireworks within the city limits is prohibited, and no fireworks of any kind are permitted on the Jefferson City Memorial Airport property.

JCPD will also join other Missouri law enforcement agencies during the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign today through Tuesday in an effort to
prevent impaired driving. In 2015, there were 192 people killed and 644 seriously injured in Missouri crashes involving at least one impaired driver.

During this holiday weekend, additional police officers will be watching for hazardous moving violations and impaired drivers.

The overtime for these additional officers is made possible through grant funding provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation Division of Traffic and Highway Safety and the Missouri Safety Center.
