Combs leads public administrator money race

Rik Combs has raised and spent the most money among the three Republican candidates for Cole County's public administrator.

Incumbent Marilyn Schmutzler, a Democrat, is retiring at the end of this term.

Retiree Joe Kuensting is second among the three Republicans in fundraising and spending, while JoDonn Chaney is third in both categories.

Combs and Kuensting have been in the running since last summer, while Chaney joined the race this year.

Since July 2015, Combs has raised $17,503, including a $5,000 loan from himself and two $1,000 loans from James Combs.

His largest contributions were $1,600 from Thomas Murphy, of Cottondale, Alabama; $1,000 from James Combs (through a total of three, separate donations); and $250 each from the Jefferson Bank PAC and from Wayne Laufer, of Sanibel, Florida.

Combs also reported getting $5,876 in donations of $100 or less at two fundraisers held this year and seven individual contributions under $100 each.

He's spent $15,786.04, mostly on advertising and printing costs.

His expenses also include $703.44 for shirts; $398.87 for promotional items; $275 for a Chamber of Commerce barbecue sponsorship; two $125 checks for sponsorships in the American Red Cross and Jefferson City Jays football golf tournaments; and $100 for a county fair sponsorship.

Kuensting raised $11,294.94, including $5,250 in loans to himself.
He received most of his money in small contributions - 25 donations of $50 or less and six donations from $51-100.

Kuensting also received $1,233 in donations of $100 or less from people attending a fundraiser at the American Legion.

His largest gifts were $186 from Charles Pierce; $250 from the Jefferson Bank PAC; $150 from Capital Property Management; and four donations of $100 each.

Kuensting spent $6,752.35, mostly on advertising.

His expenses also included $975 for food and the hall rental for a fundraiser at the American Legion Hall and $250 for a Chamber of Commerce wine competition sponsorship.

Chaney has raised $2,210.00, with no loans reported.

His largest reported contributions were $500 from Dick Moore and $200 each from Jefferson Bank, Bob Gilbert and someone reported as "Anonymous."

Chaney's spent $2,591.96, including $840 for signs and advertising, $331.03 for information cards, $268.50 for T-shirts and a $153.50 fee for his spot in the Salute to America parade.

Democrat Jean Schwaller faces no primary opponent, and her campaign finance information is not included in this article.
