Victim in road rage incident identified

'Extremely difficult case' remains under investigation

As authorities continue to investigate the possible road-rage death of a Jefferson City man, the victim's name was released Wednesday.

Thomas Davis, 64, died after the incident between him and another man near St. Martins on June 13.

In an obituary that ran in the June 18 News Tribune, the family said Davis was a previous business partner of Cook and Davis Construction Company in Jefferson City and an over-the-road truck driver for Mebruer Trucking in Rich Fountain. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City.

"Tom enjoyed fishing and hunting, dirt track racing, sports especially football and baseball, and he was an avid runner," his family said in his memorial. "Tom loved music, telling stories, and always had to try everything at least once. He always had to be busy and was a tender-hearted person who never said no to anyone in need."

The Cole County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the incident, which occurred between 1:40-2 p.m. in the St. Martins area, possibly U.S. 50 or Route T.

Davis' truck was described as a light tan, 2005 GMC quad-cab pickup. The description of the suspect was a heavy-set, white male, covered in tattoos, wearing a big ring on one hand and driving a blue Ford Taurus.

At 5:44 a.m. June 16, one of the victim's daughters called the Sheriff's Department to make a report and say her father was in a medically induced coma due to a brain bleed. She had tried to get her father to make a report, but he declined.

Department officials wanted to speak with her father when he woke up - but he never did.

Davis was a bone and organ donor, and those procedures were done prior to an autopsy. The results of the autopsy are still pending.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Capt. John Wheeler said without being able to talk to the victim, sheriff's investigators haven't been able to determine what actually led to the assault.

"We continue to follow up on leads, but this has been an extremely difficult case," he said.
