Jackson files for council on last day

On the last day for filing for the April 4 municipal election, a third candidate filed for the contested race in Jefferson City's 4th Ward.

Charles Jackson, former director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety, said Tuesday one of his reasons for running was to try to address issues he has seen while conducting an advocacy program in Jefferson City's municipal court.

"We have a lack of employment in the area, and we need improved educational opportunities," he said. "We also have homeless kids going to school that I'm sure the public is unaware of. It's surprising what you learn
sitting in court."

Jackson said he also would like to improve the city's bus service so those without vehicles can have easy access to shopping or other needs.

Jackson joins Ron Fitzwater and Leonard Steinman in the race. They are running for the seat vacated by Glen Costales in November, when Costales resigned to focus on family concerns.

The winner will serve a one-year term and can run again next year for a regular two-year term.

"I've talked to Glen throughout his tenure, and I thought, 'I'll offer my services,'" Jackson said.

Jackson currently serves on the Missouri Public Defenders Commission and the Sentencing Advisory Commission for the Missouri Department of Corrections.
