Brian Scrivner, who has been California city clerk for 16 years, announced Monday he will retire at the end of March.

California City Clerk Brian Scrivner will retire March 30, 2018. The California Board of Aldermen accepted his resignation at its regular meeting Monday. He has been in the position for 16 years.

The council discussed the need to have a new city clerk on board by Jan. 1, if possible. The clerk's work includes the city budget and payroll, among other tasks.

A second position discussed Monday was the recreation supervisor. The council wants someone in the position as soon as possible to supervise the city's swimming pool, baseball, softball, T-ball, soccer, basketball and more.

The city's three nuisance ordinances were discussed Monday but were not brought up for a vote. There seems to be little problem with the revised nuisance ordinance or the ordinance prohibiting working on motor vehicles on the street. Definitions remain to be worked out for the ordinance prohibiting parking on grass in city limits. Specifically, the question of farm land was brought up, regarding whether a property owner can park farm machinery on grass and what qualifies as a paved surface.

The board approved several bids on work to be done on the swimming pool, including the doors, cleaning the pool and resurfacing the area in the locker rooms. The total for the four bids from several companies is $43,140.

The next regular monthly meeting is set for Dec. 4.
