JCPD patrols lead to arrest of murder suspect from Louisiana

One of four people arrested Tuesday night in Jefferson City turned out to be a suspect in a murder case from Louisiana.

Police reports show Derik Gomez-Martinez, 22, initially was arrested for possession of marijuana. He gave officers false information about his identity, but they determined who he really was and found he had an outstanding warrant for murder out of New Orleans.

As of Wednesday morning, he was being held in the Cole County Jail awaiting extradition.

Gomez-Martinez was among four people taken into custody Tuesday night in connection with an investigation into recent disturbances and shots-fired calls on or near Ventura Avenue on Jefferson City's west side. In particular, residents had complained about several incidents where vehicles were damaged by gunfire.

The police department's Community Action Team and patrol section began directed enforcement efforts that led to Tuesday's arrests. Police officials said the patrols will continue, and they encourage citizens to contact the department about criminal activity in this area or anywhere in the community.
