Abuse case leads to probation

A Jefferson City man was placed on two years of supervised probation after a Cole County jury found him guilty in connection with an abuse case.

Arik Byers, 32, was found guilty of misdemeanor third-degree assault following a trial in June with Cole County Judge Dan Green presiding.

Byers originally was charged with child abuse in the case from January 2016.

He committed the crime at a residence in the 1000 block of East Capitol Avenue, according to court documents.

The victim was a child under age 2. The child had bruising and red marks on the right side of the face, and Byers told authorities he had struck the victim in the face. The child also had several red marks and scars on the back and legs.

Byers has a previous conviction for second-degree assault in November 2011.
