Columbia woman dies jumping from overpass

A Columbia woman died Friday afternoon after jumping off an overpass in Holts Summit and then getting hit by a vehicle on U.S. 54.

Police Chief Kyle McIntyre said officers were called at 2:22 p.m. to the Center Street overpass.

Witnesses later told police that Deana Arcane, 46, jumped from the bridge and landed on the westbound lanes of 54 below before being struck by a vehicle.

Emergency medical crews worked on Arcane at the scene and took her to Capital Region Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities are investigating the cause of death of a woman in Holts Summit on Friday afternoon.

Police Chief Kyle McIntyre said officers were called to the Center Street overpass around 2:22 p.m.

A woman, not believed to be from Holts Summit, either fell or jumped from the bridge and landed on U.S. 54 below.

The woman then was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 54, McIntyre said

Emergency medical crews worked with the woman at the scene and took her to a Jefferson City hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

McIntyre said he believed an autopsy would be done to help authorities determine what happened. Preliminary results might not be available until next week, he said.
