Columbia man has been charged in drug case

A Columbia man has been charged in connection with illegal drug activity in Jefferson City.

Yashim Smith, 19, is charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement, several members of the police department were in the 100 block of West Dunklin Street at around 8:30 p.m. Friday, conducting an ongoing investigation into one of two recent murder cases in the city.

Two plain clothes officers found several males in the area who they believed were carrying guns and involved in illegal drug activity.

The officers said Smith allegedly had threatened them with a concealed handgun.

When other officers arrived at the scene, Smith had gotten into a vehicle and driven away. Smith was pulled over a short time later.

When Smith was told why he was pulled over, he said he had a gun in a shoulder bag and that it was legally bought by him.

Officers recovered the gun, a Glock 19, and searched Smith’s car where they found nearly a half pound of marijuana stashed under the engine hood. Smith was also found to have a bag with about 14 grams of marijuana in his pants.
