Pool work discussed at California council meeting

The California City Board of Aldermen met Jan. 2, because of the Jan. 1 holiday.

It was reported to the council the roof over the locker rooms at the municipal swimming pool needs to be replaced. The problem was discovered from leaks that appeared on the newly repainted walls inside the locker room.

It was determined the 30-by-70-foot roof sustained serious storm damage, estimated at about $12,500. A couple of old non-functioning air-handling units will be removed before the new roof is put on. The main roof is in good shape. Bids will be sought soon for the roof repair.

It was also decided to remove an old 120-gallon electric hot water heater and replace it with a tank-less hot water heater. The new heater will cost about $1,500. Since the current one costs from $80-100 in electricity a month to operate, the money saved operating the new one should pay for it in about a year.

The underwater pool cleaner is no longer functioning. It has been rebuilt once already, and now needs to be replaced. The council approved ordering a replacement for a cost of $1,200.

The city utility department reported it has been busy dealing with the results of the cold weather. There have been frozen pipes, frozen water meters and other problems in the city. In city hall, a frozen water pipe and a couple of others in the police department needed to be thawed.

In other business:

Leslie Scheidt, who recently accepted the position of recreation supervisor, and Aimee Hill, who recently accepted the position of city clerk, effective April 1, attended their first official council meeting. Each are introduced to the readers in separate articles in this issue of the California Democrat.

The Board of Aldermen approved the Cedar Ridge Estates Plat into the California city limits. The 49 and a half acre plat with 26 lots is located north of West Cedar Street.

A reminder is that filing for City Council continues through Jan. 16.

The next regular council meeting is planned for Feb. 5.
