Eagles donate for cancer treatment equipment

The Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693, of Jefferson City presented a gift of $4,456.88 to the Capital Region Medical Foundation.

The money will go toward a new linear accelerator in the Goldschmidt Cancer Center. A linear accelerator is the device most commonly used for radiation treatment for cancer patients.

The new accelerator brings advanced treatment options to the center’s cancer patients, radiation oncologist Jay Allen said in a news release. It can customize high-energy X-rays or electrons to conform to a tumor’s shape to destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding tissue.

Total Eagles donations to the medical center have exceeded $123,000 over the years.
