JC man charged in Tuesday weapons case

A Jefferson City man is accused of shooting a weapon at a vehicle Tuesday night.

Arthur Phillips Jr., 26, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of West Atchison Street around 6:30 p.m., according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement. Three shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Officers reportedly saw Phillips leaving an apartment building near where the casings were found. He allegedly said he was there to visit a friend, but officers said Phillips didn’t know the name of the friend.

Video surveillance at the apartment building reportedly show Phillips speaking with people outside the apartment building just before the shooting. He eventually is shown with a pistol in his hand and shot several times at a vehicle. He then ran toward the vehicle and continued shooting.

A search of a laundry room turned up a handgun hidden near a washing machine, and authorities believe this was the weapon used by Phillips.

Although no one was injured, authorities noted two people were in the vehicle Phillips allegedly shot at, and a stray bullet went into a neighbor’s window where a family resides.
