Tennessee man caused deadly US 54 crash while fleeing

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities say a Tennessee man was fleeing from police when he caused a Mid-Missouri crash in which he died and killed a couple who had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Demarius Rubin, of Memphis, was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 54 when he collided with a car Sunday near the highway's intersection with Goller Road south of Jefferson City.

The victims in the car were 91-year-old Bernard Steffel and 89-year-old Marilyn Steffel. Their oldest son, Bernie Steffel Jr., says his parents celebrated their wedding anniversary last Thursday. They were heading home to the St. Louis suburb of Bellefontaine Neighbors from the Lake of the Ozarks.

Records show Rubin was on probation in Tennessee, where he had convictions for domestic assault, drug possession, stealing and burglary.
