Our Opinion: Got talent? Revive some '80s pop culture

Want to "Have the Time of Your Life," sing "Twist and Shout" while riding a parade float or just be "Bad?"

If so, join the fun of "Rockin' the '80s," the theme for this year's Mid-Missouri's Got Talent, a fundraiser for the United Way of Central Missouri.

Video submissions for the event will be accepted through Aug. 7. Videos may be submitted online at NewsTribune.com/UnitedWayCemo.

We referenced scenes from the movies - "Dirty Dancing" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - and a song by Michael Jackson, but those are only a few gems from the 1980s' pop culture vault.

During the '80s, the King of Pop shared the charts with Madonna, Def Leppard and "hair bands" including Poison, Motley Crue and Cinderella.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T." and the second installments in the "Star Wars" and "Superman" series dominated the big screen while television viewers largely were tuned in to "Dallas," "MASH" and "Facts of Life" - as well as MTV.

Participants are asked to review the rules and regulations on the News Tribune contest platform before submitting.

Videos will be uploaded to the site beginning Aug. 1, and community members may vote, at $1 per vote, through Aug. 31.

The highest number of online votes will determine the People's Choice winner.

In addition, the votes will be among the factors used by a panel of independent judges to selected the six finalists that will perform live during the event, to be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at The Millbottom Event Center, 400 W. Main St. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Last year, 24 videos were received for the debut of Mid-Missouri's Got Talent.

This year's sequel promises to be a "Thriller" you won't want to miss.
