Your Opinion: Proposal called misuse of TIF process

Dear Editor:

The recent discussions concerning a TIF for the reconstruction of the old Ramada Inn complex is a major misuse of the TIF process.

After reviewing the numbers covering the basics for a near $9 million grant to the developers, the city may be flirting with fraud. Inflating numbers to this extent insults the intelligence of the mayor, council and the public as well. Do the applicants think the city is this incompetent?

I bought a hotel in Jefferson City in 1967. I've been involved with the purchase and development with four other hotels over the years. I know of no other hotels in Jefferson City who needed a TIF to be successful nor does this one.

The chances of this project meeting needed requirements for a TIF are zero. The TIF commission realized this and voted 7-1 against.

If the council overturns this mandate they are not representing the taxpayers. And if not the taxpayers who do they represent?
