Your Opinion: The world is watching our election

Dear Editor:

As the 2016 presidential campaign slithers to a slimy close the words of the Bard seem prescient: "Lord, what fools we mortals be."

It has been said that voters have short memories. However, it is difficult for a thinking person to forget the week preceding the 2012 presidential election when our very salvation hung in the balance unless we voted correctly. Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum made it very clear that President John Kennedy's words on separation of church and state made him want to "throw up."

There was only one safe way to vote, and that was not just GOP, but "God's Own Party." Church leaders such as Cardinal Burke and Archbishop Paprocki left no doubt about that. Furthermore, on Oct. 7, 2012, hundreds of pastors took to their pulpits, in defiance of IRS regulations, to promote their beliefs on "Pulpit Freedom Sunday."

Religious leaders were further backed up by great thinkers and political leaders such as Todd Akin, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman and the ubiquitous Rev. Mike Huckabee.

As in the comic strip, Pogo sums up this election year with the words, "We have met the enemy and he is us." Let's not forget that it was "we the people" who were responsible for the original clown car of candidates who ran for president. Ultimately, we as voters decided that these two candidates were best qualified to represent the U.S., both her and abroad. The world is watching.

Is it too late for an exorcism?
