Your Opinion: Response on 'Basket of Deplorables'

Dear Editor:

To Steve Sampson, who is "deeply offended" that he is in Hillary Clinton's "Basket of Deplorables." (Op-Ed Sept. 21).

Hillary's comment was "you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic "you name it."

In which basket(s) do you reside Steve?

Do you believe it's deplorable to spread lies and innuendo? I do. Your Op-Ed does exactly that. The comment about your "not losing your law license because of lying to the grand jury" is part misdirected truth and part innuendo. Bill Clinton agreed to suspension of his law license following the Clinton-v-Jones mess. (I will never say HRC is "perfect." After all, she married Bill didn't she?)

Vince Foster died by suicide. Using someone's suicide for political posturing is deplorable.

Hillary Clinton did not "start" the "birther" silliness as you assert. The fact checking websites state that "birther" movement posts were found on the FreeRepublic.com website (a right wing blog) approximately a month before Clinton supporters got hold of it. (Later, Clinton supporters did forward emails discussing political use of the birther theory, but the "theory" was started by GOP operatives.)

Personally Steve, I believe that if you assert a fact, it  should be truth.

At least your comments about abortion, Planned Parenthood and the transgender kerfuffle in North Carolina deal in opinion, not mistreatment of fact.

A few words though about the Republican nominee. (You don't explicitly state you are voting for Trump, but one has to assume.)

The corruption and lack of ethics in Trump and his organization are truly mind-boggling. Racism toward tenants, political bribery, and illegal use of the Trump foundation funds, Trump University scam, and deliberately stiffing contractors for work are all well and copiously documented. The more that is uncovered; the greater it seems the adoration by the "right".

And we have not yet begun to discuss the river of sewage (Trump's campaign rhetoric.)

What perplexes me is the "right's" predilection to argue corruption by HRC, then point to Trump as a viable alternative as our president. Donald Trump is simply not an appropriate personality for leadership of this great country. It's deplorable that he is being taken as one by a large fraction of the citizens who refer to themselves as "Republican."

He might win. Actually that is more than deplorable; it's terrifying.
