Your Opinion: Defending complement

Dear Editor:

Carol Jones recently stated she was offended by Brian Dudenhoeffer's claims that Trump's wife and daughter are nice looking. The question is why. It is a valid complement on their physical appearance and in no way makes any negative assertions as to their intellect or other talents. Plus the compliment in no way has any negative effect on Ms. Jones. Just because someone says that Mrs. Trump is good looking in no way indicates that Ms. Jones is somehow less intelligent or less capable.

I personally have spent years being prejudged for my physical appearance. I will never forget the day when one of my teachers announced that my high school photo was ranked 24th. Girls in the class gasped and one said "you mean they thought someone was uglier than him?" Then there was the time a clerk at a department store threw my job application away and stated to her co-work, "he isn't good looking enough to work here." These were painful experiences but I learned that one's physical appearance does not define a person's character, knowledge, work ethic or skills. The internet has been flooded with horrible comments on President Trump's physical appearance from the start. I am in no way offended at all, because it is about making a choice to not be offended, to not tie my self-worth to anti-Trump comments and most importantly it isn't about me. Besides there are so many things in this universe we should be offended by there is no point in wasting the energy on a compliment.
