Your Opinion: Time to wake up

Dear Editor:

The time is at hand to consider circumstance in which we, the United States of America citizens, are now embroiled in.

In a democracy, we have rights and obligations. We have rights to worship as we please, to vote as we see fit without discourse from our neighbors, and the right to live our lives without fear of intimidation.

We also have the "obligation" to stand behind our elected president until such a time as his or her principles interfere with our freedoms and/or lives.

We have endured unfortunate happenings in our great country and around the world. We have read about horrifying acts being perpetrated on innocent people. It is not for us to judge the legitimacy of these acts if we are not in complete understanding of why they have taken place; but, it is our responsibility to seek out methods of altering, or if possible, eliminating them.

All presidents of the United States have made judgments that they have felt necessary, and signed legislation that we may not understand. Any one of us, given this job so involved with decisions and problems, would make some decisions that would not be agreed with. They must do what they feel necessary! If we would try to understand and trust them, we might discover why they made the decision and discover that it was the right thing to do. The elected president knows many things to which we are not privy, and deserves the respect that goes with the office.

Today we are being manipulated by false news! We deserve truthful news, not what a reporter's opinion is. It seems that every news source tells us their "version" of the story. The facts become lost. Frequently only a portion of a statement is reported, consequently slanting the report to fit the reporter's opinion. Check for online fake news. Too often the critical point is missing, it gets published and forwarded without fact checking. It is time for us to understand what is really happening around us. If we do not start paying attention, our politicians will do as they please. We must not allow them to continue duplicating the politicians of ancient Rome and Greece who plundered the public to further their individual agendas.

Don't be a victim of false news verify the facts you will be glad that you did.
