Your Opinion: Brutal challenge of First Amendment

Dear Editor:

The First Amendment to our Constitution is the most hated contrivance yet produced by mankind. It is a brutal challenge. Living out that commandment requires that at least two people be capable of behaving in contradiction to their most natural and powerful inclinations. There must be a speaker who can, for a time, express himself with utter disregard for the possibilities of social and physical injury and death. There must be a listener who is able to withstand the agony of witnessing his most treasured sensibilities being tortured and ripped without mercy at the hands of a devil and a liar, without raising a finger against the speaker, and without the merest suggestion of the most subtle threat.
